COMBATING DISEASE

“Those who have no time for nutrition and exercise had better reserve a lot of time for disease” Michael Colgan

Many people nowadays are interested in nutrition, and there is plenty of information on the correct foods to eat, and exactly what vitamins and minerals we need for optimum health.

People are putting more effort into strengthening their immune system and, hopefully, learning more about combating disease before it even starts.

However, if we have spent many years filling ourselves with junk foods and not enough exercise, we cannot expect to suddenly turn this around immediately, just because we change our diet and start going regularly to the gym.

Our bodies take time to adjust, and that may take a few months or more before we see any real benefits, which is why many people find themselves sadly disillusioned, and abandon the effort, whilst claiming it just doesn't work.

Drugs are often invaluable in overcoming disease and, with the right diagnosis and treatment, bring rapid results. However, nutrients work on the body in a different way, strengthening it in order to prevent and combat disease, and therefore the response is much slower, but longer lasting.

Nature has a wonderful way of recharging itself and, if we understood how the process works within our bodies, we might find ourselves with more patience when waiting for changes to take place.

We are told that a blood cell only lasts 60 – 120 days.

In 3 – 4 months our whole blood supply is completely replaced.

In 6 months almost all the proteins in our body die and are replaced. This includes the DNA of our genes.

In a year all our bones and even the enamel on our teeth is replaced, constructed entirely out of the nutrients that we eat.

If we understand this, we can more easily see how it takes a long time for deficiency problems to occur, which dupes us into believing that we can remain healthy inspite of a poor diet.

Here, we are advised that, if we remove all the vitamin C from our diet, within 4 weeks our blood vitamin C will drop to nothing. But we will see no symptoms of disease at this time.

We will have to wait until enough of the healthy cells have been replaced by unhealthy cells, and it will take about another 12 weeks before symptoms of scurvy begin to appear.

So when you implement an optimum nutrition programme, don’t expect rapid results.

An interesting analogy has been given, by likening the process to a neglected houseplant. Once we start feeding and watering it, the leaves may perk up a bit from the improved nutrition. But we have to wait for the old leaves to die off and the new leaves to grow before we get a really healthy plant.

It is the same with the human body. When we start feeding it better, we have to wait for the body to grow new improved cells before we can be truly satisfied with the results.
