Homeopathy

What is Homeopathy?

Homeopathy is a safe, gentle, effective and well-established system of health care, based on a holistic approach to patients and their health.

All aspects of an individual's symptoms, lifestyle, personality and medical history are considered to be relevant to their state of health, and are taken into account by the practitioner before a prescription is made.

Homeopathic remedies, selected from a vast range of natural substances, are then used to stimulate the person's ability to heal themselves. Unlike conventional medicine, Homeopathy views symptoms as part of the healing process and not as part of the disease.

This why the selection of a remedy is based on the Law of Similars. By reflecting back to the body, the symptoms it is producing, the remedy promotes the healing process.

Homeopathy has been in world-wide use for 200 years in its' current form, having been started in the late 18th Century by Samuel Hahnemann. However, it was first proposed by Hippocrates.

Most remedies have been in use throughout the last 2 centuries, although new remedies are constantly being added to the range available. Consequently, they are well researched and their effects are very well known.

Who uses Homeopathy?

Anyone who wants to, is the short answer. Many people try homeopathy after finding other more well known treatments are not effective for their condition.

Additionally, some are attracted by the non-toxic nature of the remedies, especially when they cannot take more intrusive medication, for example, pregnant women or those individuals with allergic reactions to drugs.

Avoidance of potentially harmful drugs also draws people to homeopathy, especially those who do not wish to see their children taking strong medication.

An advantage for those who like to establish a good and effective relationship with their health practitioner, is that the time taken for a consultation is usually between 45 minutes and 1 hour 30 minutes.

What can be treated with Homeopathy?

Anything! Homeopathy works with the individuals natural healing process. If it is possible to recover from an illness, then homeopathic remedies can prompt and support that recovery.

Homeopathy works by improving your overall level of health. It is particularly effective in dealing with stress and lifestyle associated problems, such as skin disorders, asthma, Chronic Fatigues (ME), IBS, PMS, and allergies.

Homeopathy is also particularly helpful with mental and emotional problems, including depression, stress or anxiety and their after-effects. Homeopathic remedies also assist with the after-effects of medical drugs and addictions.

What is the treatment like?

At the first consultation, the Homeopath will spend a considerable amount of time finding out all about your medical history, your lifestyle and any current illness. Based on the overall picture of your case, the Homeopath will prescribe a remedy or remedies, usually in the form of pills. The remedies are non-toxic, non-addictive and completely safe.

When treatment starts, people often experience a feeling of well-being after taking a remedy or, on occasion, feel quite tired. Both are good signs, indicating that the remedy is taking effect. Occasionally, particularly when treating chronic problems, there can be some form of discharge, perhaps a rash or a cold, or a slight headache. Again, although uncomfortable, these are positive signs that the body is starting to heal.

How often do you need to see a Homeopath?

It is worth remembering that Homeopathy should be considered a process rather than a one-off visit. The continued and substantial return to a better state of health which homeopathy can achieve - with the associated improvements in all aspects of your life, including increased energy, an improvement in well-being, and freedom from pain - will normally only be maintained after a number of visits.

Acute problems such as flu, inflammation and accidents can all be dealt with effectively, whether or not you are already under homeopathic treatment. In an acute situation, a telephone call is often sufficient to determine the appropriate remedy for a regular patient because the practitioner knows the individual well, and has already prescribed for them.
